Happy 3rd Voxiversary

Well it's been another year here on VOX for a total of three and I hate to said to say it but I think my blogging honeymoon is over.

This blogging thing is a lot of work.

In previous years I did a round up of (what I felt were) my best posts, photos & events that happened here. Unfortunately this year you're not getting it. I really dropped off the map this past year and only posted 10% as many posts as my first year on VOX. Of course I did sleep more, so there's an upside to everything.

My initial reason for blogging here was to document all the happens of the family, but once I realized that people actually check Facebook, I started to move stuff over there.

Secondly last year I really started trying to post on stuff that I had first hand knowledge or effected me personally in some way. That really brought down the number of superfluous posts but it also broke me from daily posting and like going to the gym once you stop going it's hard to start again.

So for this coming year I'll going to make an effort to post at least once a week, if nothing more than for the fact I enjoy writing and I really miss doing it. Plus I've totally missed out on my neighborhood here. Children have been born during the time I've been away!

The mistake parents can sometimes make is to put everything they enjoy on hold and defer to their children and with an ever growing family that's been the case. But a lesson I've learned is that you've got to make time for yourself or you'll go crazy and VOX is a great outlet for me in that regard. Plus (hopefully) children move out.

So here's to another year on VOX. I just wish they would let us export / backup our blogs.

Happy 2nd Voxiversary: Photoshop

In contrast to my first year on VOX I did half the number of Photoshop graphics to go along with my posts (including my voxiversary cake graphic). I blame my iPod Touch keeping me online, but off my desktop. Kids, work and sleep problebly also had something to do with it.

So my goal for the next year is to really try to do more of these. I enjoy doing them and they make me feel like I have a real blog.

Happy 2nd Voxiversary: Traffic

Thanks to tools like StatCounter and Google Analytics I'm able to see what the traffic has been like over the past year here at Grantalias.

Since the crazy traffic spike from last year it's been pretty quite around the old blog. Though it has been consistent numbers.

Unfortunately all the top visited posts are from 2007.

That a side, I did make the explore page three times for the following posts! That was pretty exciting!

Happy 2nd Voxiversary: Best of The Best

Here are some of the more memorable posts by month here at grantalias over the past year.

  • December Saint or Villan. Me worrying about the similarities between Santa Claus and Pirates.
  • January Then & Now Melbourne. Having undertaken scanning the family slides, I discovered some from the Australian side of the family. I spent a couple of days on google image search matching up the photos with past and present landmarks of a city I've never been to. Both educational and fun.
  • February Free, The Music. After a friend asked me why I buy music, I wrote this post about what the drawbacks to buying DRMed music and free alternatives to p2p file sharing.
  • March You Can Never Go Back. I wrote this post after visiting downtown and feeling a little sentimental about my youth I spent there.
  • April Twittering the Doctor. Staying up late I watched the season four premier of Doctor Who and twittered it from the couch on my iPod Touch.
  • May Fly You To The Moon. I added all the family's names to the payload of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Space here we come.
  • June The True North Strong and Free, But Tolerant? I talked about the downside to being an Anglo minority in Quebec and how my kids might react to it when they are older.
  • July iPhone Canada Launch. Still way to expensive in my book, I checked out the launch of the iPhone 3G.
  • August. Go To Montreal, Collect $200. Montreal was named the number one spot in the new Monolopy Here & Now World Edition.
  • September Google Chrome. Like most geeks out there I downloaded and tried out Google's browser Chrome.
  • October The List: Netiquette. Some tips I have for people in regards to email, photo sharing and Facebook.
  • November I Got DMCAed. Probably the biggest news is when I got a notice from YouTube about using copyrighted music in a family video.

Happy 2nd Voxiversary To Grantalias

That's right, it's been another year here on VOX! I joined December 2nd and my first post was on the 3rd.

I might not have posted as much as I did during the previous year and that was on purpose. There was a concerted effort here at grantalias to post more hands on experiences and less thrid party news. At the very least to put my own view on the subject and I think I succeeded.

In the vein of last year's Voxiversary there will be a couple of days of celebrations here at grantalias, that is if I don't fall asleep at night.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Continuing our week long voxiversary celebrations here at grantalias.

Over this past year I've posted tons. Most were forgettable but for argument's sake lets just pretend they were all golden. Ok? Some were fun, others serious and most self-deprecating. But they all helped me (I feel) improve my writing and it was time well spent .

Here are some of my favorites.

  • Sealand has managed to garner two posts here on grantalias over the past year. One about the principality going up for sale and the other how to get your very own lordly title. I don't know what it's about Sealand that captures my imagination but I get so excited just at the mention of it.
  • I have no problem laughing at myself, just so long as I'm the one making the jokes. And there certainly hasn't been a shortage of material to be inspired by this past year. Whether I was pulling a Henry Kissinger, grocery shopping with a headache, crushing on Doc Cottle or terrified of spiders growing in my ear I tried to laugh at the situation every time.
  • VOX has provided me with a perfect outlet for one of my favorite past times, the rant. Three things that I cannot stand are email hoaxes, prequels and Michael Bay films.
  • When VOX partnered with Snap, I posted on the features of SnapShots. What's really cool was being mentioned on the Snap blog along with other VOXers who were using the service. Famous! Like many other VOXers I got a free pack of Moo Cards to help promote my blog. I still have every intention to order more, I just need the money to do so.
  • But it can't be all fun and games here at grantalias. Sometimes I let down that blogging wall and talk about subjects that have touched me such as Dr. Herbert Savel's artwork or political questions here at home.

Photoshop Fun

Continuing our week long voxiversary celebrations here at grantalias.

Some make a living playing with Photoshop, unfortunately I'm not one of the them. I've forgotten more than I remember.

I'm very task driven when it comes to Photoshop. If I don't have a specific task I won't touch it for months on end and then when I do I'm exceedingly rusty.

But VOX has helped me hold on to the few remaining short cuts I do remember.

When (I think) I've come up with some clever pun or joke for a post (and have the time), I attempt a Photoshop graphic  to accompany it. Sometimes they just suck, that's why you don't see them all that often.

Traffic This

Continuing our week long voxiversary celebrations here at grantalias.

A few months ago I added StatCounter to my VOX to data farm personal information about you to sell to third parties. Just kidding. Like most bloggers I wanted to know if anyone actually read this blog (excluding my neighbors of course).

It was really cool to see what posts were being hit. I would backtrack in google to see what search words would bring up any given post. It's a really addictive game so don't start yourself.

In early November when two of my posts were indexed on a Mac site, I had an extra 300 hits over the weekend. I was freaking out. Ask Donna, I drove her crazy! Tip: You want to increase traffic? Post about Apple, trust me.

All that fun went out the window when I did a little post on a FaceBook chain letter. Now I get so much traffic to that one post I can't tell if anyone looks at anything else.

I guess I shouldn't complain? Traffic is traffic right?

Next time we''ll let you know how VOX made me love Photoshop all over again.

365 or Happy Voxiversary

365. That's how many days I've been on VOX. It's also the number of posts I've done in the past year. A little goal I set for myself. I apologize to my neighborhood.

I'm selective as to who I add to my neighborhood so they are all quality. I might not always comment on every post but I do read them guys. 😉

Those who know me (in real life), know that I love to talk. You also know that well articulated and thought out ideas are not my forte. VOX gives me the time to develop these thoughts and ideas and I can easily spend an hour composing a post. That doesn't guarantee that it'll be a work of art, but it certainly increases the odds.

Thanks VOX for this past year of blogging, it's been fun.

The week long voxiversary continues
