Data Breaches For Services I Don’t Use, Thanks Epsilon

Should I tell them that I don’t even use the BestBuy Reward Zone since I signed up for it years ago?

BestBuy Canada’s reward zone email provider Epsilon has a data breach and I received this email letting me know that “the only information that has been exposed was your name and email address”. My name and email address? Just the thing that companies covet and the life blood of the spammer. Thanks Epsilon.

They do give you some sound email security advice about not on clicking links or attachments. BestBuy or any other reputable company / bank will never ask for credit card or any other information in an email.

Here I was thinking that email spam was a thing of the past since Facebook has replaced the internet and all subsequent messaging tools. Oh well.

Too Good To Be True

I have a great deal for you. All you have to do to forward an email to at least 8 people, cc: anna.swelung@ericsson.com and you'll get a 6 year old discontinued phone for free. You can't beat that.

Doesn't sound that hot of a deal when I put it that way now does it.

A Google search proved this a hoax. urbandlegends.about.com, snopes.com and ibenaija.wordpress.com all talked about this chain letter

He's the body of the email I received.

Hi everyone,
The Ericsson Company is distributing free computer Lap-tops in an attempt to match Nokia that has already done so. Ericsson hopes to increase its popularity this way. For this reason, they are giving away the new WAP laptops. All you need to do to qualify is to send this mail to 8 people you know. Within 2 weeks, you will receive EricssonT18. But if you can send it to 20 people or more, you will receive Ericsson R320.
Make sure to send a copy to: anna.swelung@ericsson.com

  • First off as far as I know Ericsson and Nokia make cell phone not laptops.

  • Secondly there is no way to track emails you send to other people so that you will get a check, a laptop, a cell phone, or your very own personal baby Jesus.
  • Thirdly you should simply know better than that. If it sounds too good to be true it is.

On a side note my very first cell phone was the T18D. I loved it, I had a leather case,an extra battery, car charger, the works. The only downside is that flip was purely cosmetic and had a tendency to pop off.

Let’s Never POP3 or SMTP Again

That's how I've felt the last week in regards to my (up to now stellar) relationship with Bell Sympatico.

I'm not going to get in the details since I will just get  anger blindness again and I want to go to bed before midnight.

Here's the short version.

  • Dad's email not working.
  • Call Sympatico tech support for a couple of hours.
  • Dad's email still not working.
  • Call Sympatico tech support for another couple of hours.
  • Dad's email still not working.
  • Dad calls tech support for a few hours.
  • Dad's email, you guessed it still not working.
  • Call tech support for three hours.
  • Got disconnected twice.
  • Break the rest the family's email accounts.
  • Freak out.
  • Talk to tech support agent I should have talked to a week ago.
  • Problem fixed in 10 minutes.
  • Feel bad for all the things I called Frank & Gordon.

Empty Inbox

So I did it the other night… for months I've been thinking about it. I know what you're saying, how could I, but I just couldn't stop myself.

I actually filed both my Hotmail and Sympatico inboxs and they are completely empty. Yeah for me. Oh course it's only a matter of time till they fill up with people I don't know offering me Viagra for rock bottom prices and  fw:fw:fw:fw:fw:fw messages from people I do know.

Now All I have to do is file my gmail account and I'll be sitting pretty.
