Typepad Micro & The Real Reason You Should Care… Or Not

I don't know how many of my fellow VOXer's read Team Vox's latest post but there is now a free version of Typepad called Typepad Micro.

I'm guessing with the prevalence of Twitter (@grantalias), Six Apart wanted to get into the micro blog / status site. We all knew this was eventual since their acquisition of Pownce's earlier this year.

I've done a test post on my Typepad Micro so you can see what it looks like.

You can have links to all your online sites like flickr, Vox, Facebook & Twitter. Those of us from Vox will find it very familiar. I wish it could automatically pull data from those services. It would certainly save some time for the user.

Unfortunately (like Vox) you can't pull Facebook photos but unlike Vox you can't pull photos from any service or video sites for that matter (which you can do on Vox), unless you use embed code. Unlike Twitter there isn't an ecosystem of third parties developing sites like Twitpic to close the short comings.

The only real saving grace is that you can use the Typepad iPhone app to post while on the go (which is how I composed my first post). You can link it to both Twitter and Facebook with manual or automatic posting to each service as you wish is nice. To bad it won't cross post to my Vox account. Too bad there is not a Vox app like this. And no Blog It does not count. Don't even get me started there.

Since it's Typepad you can import and export your blog to or from it. With Vox there is no such ability and I'm pretty much screwed if I ever want to move anywhere else.

UPDATE 11/24/2009

I've discovered that you can seemingly cross post from VOX to Typepad Micro (along with other LiveJournal) . I have not posted enough to actually see it work but some of you might find it interesting. My main goal was to see if I could then export my posts, but it doesn't seem possible. Maybe it's only for the paid version.

Here are the directions

  1. Click Account
  2. Click Outside services
  3. Add Blog
  4. Enter login information & save settings.

Pownce Comes to Six Apart, Hopefully Optimistic

Okay I know this is old news, but I just never got around to putting my two cents in on the subject.

Back in December Six Apart acquired the nuts and bolts of Pownce along with it's creator Leah Culver (who is now on VOX, go add her to your neighborhood). As a user of VOX for over two years this is great news from my perspective.

Maybe we will see some innovation here on our beloved VOX .When VOX launched, it's feature set was pretty good and better than anything else I had found. Unfortunatley, it's getting long in the tooth two years on.

  • You can still only import video from YouTube (where is the support for all the other video sites?). Yes you can embed them but it is not as elegant. Plus it doesn't show up in your video libaray.
  • There hasn't been any update to the upload tool for mulitpul photos, but to be fair it does do the job adaqually.
  • Still waiting for a native application for the iPhone. I would certainly blog more if there was one. I'd even gladly pay for such an application.
  • Though I haven't seen it in a while, the dreaded white screen of nothing was pretty prevelent here on VOX in the past.
  • I really look forward to the [this is good] sections but sometimes there are really slow in updating.
I'd recommend adding the editors to your neighborhood. News & Politics, Music, Life, Entertainment, Culture & Technology. When you find interesting stuff hit the share button (that's on every post) and send on to one of the editors.

These are really just annoyances, it's the community here on VOX that makes me stay. But it would be nice to see some of them addressed and maybe see some new features roll out.

I'm really hoping that the former Pownce team is the influx of new blood that VOX needs to get me excited about posting here again. Also if they could make it as easy as posting to Pownce or Twitter I would certainly post more, way more.

The Culture of Ownership

Molly Wood of BOL & Buzz Report fame has started a new blog called The Culture of Ownership.

I think this blog is a must read for everyone. Here's the gist taken from the site:

“The general feel in today’s society that everything is somehow copyrighted or property of someone else to the point where it hinders creativity and makes it much more difficult to innovate. It is also the belief that just because you created/thought of something that you should have complete and total control over every aspect of that thing, object or idea.”

When companies want to tell you what you can do with legally purchased merchandise in your own home, I think we have a problem. Even worse when said companies get governments to back them up, even worse.

I wonder how Molly maintains a normal sized head with so much brains crammed in there.

Here We Go Again…

My neighbor Majicke joined Blog 365 over on ning so this is all her fault. Sorry Majicke. 😉

Blog 365 is a group of bloggers that for the next year will blog once a day for a total of 365 posts in 2008. There's also a group here on VOX that Majicke created.

Since it was an unofficial goal of mine last year, I thought what the heck right? It's only sleep. Plus it gave me the excuse I needed to join ning. I've just been hearing so much about it on the intertubes, I  wanted to give it a try, but lacked a reason.

So you don't you join me for the next year and see if you can complete the Blog 365 challenge.

Lisa Simpson: The Secret War of Lisa Simpson
Duh! A challenge I could do!

Damn You Facebook

After months of using VOX (and I love VOX), I finally got fed up of getting invites to Facebook (which I don't like as much as VOX) and signed up.

One thing FB has going for it is that it's so easy to find friends, I mean it's really easy. An of course that's what they want, meaning the evil overlords of FB. It searches your web mail clients and finds your friends that are already members (nice). Then you can then spam… I mean let everyone else in your contact list know about FB.

If I was MySpace I would be getting worried about FB. Social networks are very fickle and you go where your friends are. Of course I feel like an idiot for not thinking of this first… FB will totally screw Classmates. Everyone has an account but I've only known one person who actually paid for a full membership. You know they are only making money from those adds in those damn emails they keep sending out.

Now I just have to figure out how to get my VOX posts to show up on my FB account.

If anyone else wants to know how to get your VOx to appear on your Facebook account here are the instructions.

Hi Grant,

Facebook allows you to quickly and easily import an external blog from
another website. On the Notes page, select the "Import a blog" link on
the right side of the page. Enter the URL of your blog into the text
box, and check the box underneath that states that you agree to our
Terms of Use. To complete the process, click on "Save Settings". Once
you do this, your past posts will be in notes and any new posts you make
will automatically display. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for contacting Facebook,

Customer Support Representative
