Drobo from Data Robotics is everything you could want. A drive enclosure expandable up to 16TB, redundancy across the four drives to protect against a drive failure, the latest version has Firewire 400 & 800 and the best price I could find in Canada was $450 sans drives. Ok, so forget that last one.
Now I have all the family photos and video (80GB worth) and my entire iTunes library backed up.
This is really just a stopgap measure until USB 3.0 starts showing up in computers and peripherals sometime in the next couple of years. Right on time for my next computer upgrade.
When you move 100GB onto a external USB drive it really puts a damper on things when it takes 3 to 4 hours or more. Thankfully the new USB 3.0 spec has transfer speeds 10 times the current USB 2.0 standard and will be backwards compatible as well.
So future checklist, computer and a Drobo with USB 3.0.
